5 telltale signs your website designer isn’t the one

If you’re looking to launch a new business or update your current one, then you should know the importance of an online presence. Without an up to date, nicely designed website your business could be left in the dark, with many potential visitors looking to your competitors beautiful websites to find out more information.

When looking for someone to build your new website, it’s important that you find someone who’s as great as you want your website and business to be. Don’t choose any old designer, take into account these telltale signs your prospective website designer might not be the one for you.

“Too” cheap

When it comes to looking for a web designer cost can be an important factor and whilst many small businesses do have a tight budget, when it comes to your website, the home of your business, it’s important you invest your money wisely. It’s good to remember that when it comes to your website you do get what you pay for, don’t be surprised if you spend £200 on a website and it doesn’t work the way you’d like. Your website should be functional, clean and modern, offering your customers a great user experience and whilst you shouldn’t pay the world for your website, it’s definitely good to remember that cheapest isn’t always best.

Their own website isn’t great

One of the biggest signs your web designer isn’t going to be great is if there own website doesn’t show off what they have to offer. Take a look at their website, does it function properly? Is the design good? Hows the layout? If their website looks great and shows off elements you would like to incorporate into your own website then you might have found the right designer for you. However if their website doesn’t work, doesn’t load and isn’t well designed this can give you an indication of the work they can do.

Doesn’t ask you questions

A good developer will want to arrange a meeting with you in person or over the phone in order to find out more about your business, your plans and to find out what you want from your website. Often they’ll have plenty of questions for you, as well as wanting to answer any questions you might have. If your web designer doesn’t seem interested in finding out more about your business then it can be a bad sign and it’s probably a better idea to look elsewhere.

There’s no portfolio

It’s never a good idea to hire a designer without doing any research into their previous work, most web design companies or freelancers will feature a portfolio on their website which will show off work they’ve completed for other clients and showing potential clients just what they’re capable of. This should be obvious, but if you can’t find any record of a designers previous work then it’s a bad sign, even if they talk big, without proof there’s no reason to even consider hiring them.

Your website can’t be updated

It’s important that you and your team can update your website yourselves, as time goes on it’s likely you’ll want to introduce new content to your website, change your product lines or even change your home page for special offers. Your web designer should be able to develop your website so that you can update it yourself, if this isn’t an option it might be that they want to make all the changes themselves in order to get paid for it. If you’re told you can’t, then you should think about looking somewhere else.
